Open Play Tips

Open Play Pickleball Tips and Etiquette

Open play is one of the fastest ways to find games in Ontario, but it works best when everyone follows a few simple rules.

Understand the rotation

At many facilities, players place their paddles in a rack or queue. When a court opens, the next paddles move in. Watch for posted rules because some locations rotate winners, others rotate everyone.

Be inclusive and read the room

If the session is casual, do not turn it into a tournament. Match the tone of the room, include newer players when appropriate, and avoid acting like every point is life or death.

Call score, lines, and kitchen faults calmly

Good open play depends on clear but respectful communication. Make calls early, keep them fair, and move on quickly after disputed points.

Know when to choose a different session

If the group is far above or below your level, look for a more suitable open play block, lesson, or ladder. That makes the experience better for everyone.
